May 10th- Value Network Principles

Today we learned more about the development and architecture in Vietnam. In the morning we had a presentation about the architectural heritage and development of Ho Chi Minh City. It was interesting to hear how ancient architecture was designed and how there was a lot of deeper meaning into how buildings are made. In the afternoon we went on our first company visit, Phu My Hung Corporation.

This company is a company in charge of developing an area called South Saigon, which is a region of marshland south of the center of Ho Chi Minh. They take once unusable land and transform it into usable residential and commercial space. They are creating a community for people to work and live and are very focused on giving residents a superior quality of living. There are a variety of restaurants, parks, and amenities so that residents can walk to everything that they will need. I thought it was interesting how there were many American restaurants and I learned that this community caters to many international residents and companies. When building, the company must consider governmental regulations such as building codes, worker safety laws, and environmental regulations. Some of the specific environmental regulations include separating the rain water drainage from sewage drainage and then treating all of this water at a treatment facility. There are also governmental regulations on how the company interacts with the buyers and commercial renters of the properties. Phu My Hung performs many different services and employs people with a variety of skill sets. There must be people to handle the construction, sales, marketing, and property management. Phu My Hung works directly with the customers and does not contract many services out to other companies. Overall there is a strong emphasis on creating a city design that lets in a lot of natural light and does make a person feel like they are trapped in a dark city. Phu My Hung is creating a new standard of living for many Vietnamese people and allowing people of many different income levels to enjoy a less crowded and more enjoyable life in the city.
